Piano City Milano. Magical fingertips shake Portanuova

Piano City Milano. Magical fingertips shake Portanuova.

The piano is having a moment in Milan. Piano City Milano, a festival of music events to narrate the town through the black-and-white keys, is back to let you explore historic neighbourhoods and new contexts, admiring their architecture and finally enjoying the return to normal daily life.

It offers gathering and sharing opportunities where the melodies invade the urban spaces and give their listeners the joy of classical, pop, jazz, and even electronic music. The Piano City Milano line-up couldn’t be complete without Portanuova. Thanks to a partnership with Feltrinelli RED, it will host – on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 – two high-class musicians, embraced by the scents of the district in bloom.

Daniele Fasani will start the dance at the Fondazione Feltrinelli building, a meeting place to absorb art, culture and fun along the Passeggiata Boris Pasternak embellished by a symphony of trees. Daniele is a young pianist specialized in modern/contemporary music, but with a sweet tooth for ancient pieces. For Piano City Milano 2022, he will present an extremely precious, elegantly performed work: “The People United Will Never Be Defeated! 36 Variations on a theme by Sergio Ortega”, by Frederic Rzewski.

Daniele Fasani will play on Saturday 21 May at 5:30 p.m. at the Fondazione Feltrinelli – Passeggiata Boris Pasternak. The event is open to all.

On Sunday 22 May, at the evocative fountain in Piazza Gae Aulenti, in front of the Feltrinelli RED bistro, it will be Vanessa Wagner’s turn to strike the heart of Portanuova, presenting combinations and alchemies of a classic repertoire with hints of contemporary music as well as chamber music using ancient pianos. An eclectic and versatile artist who has won the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris award at only 17 years and the “music revelation in solo concert” award at the Victoire de la Musique (the French equivalent of the Grammy Awards) for classical music. A multifaceted career that led Vanessa to delight the world with performances of Rameau, Haydn, Schumann, Schubert, Debussy, and Ravel. A researcher without borders who also taps into minimal and ambient genres.

Vanessa Wagner will play on Sunday 22 May at 7:30 p.m. at the Feltrinelli RED bistro, at 1 Piazza Gae Aulenti. The event is open to all.

Along with the magical music, Piano City Milano will also bring to Portanuova the spectacular Northern Lights, projected on the roof of the Volvo Studio thanks to 86,000 LED lights. The aurora will shine over an intense schedule of art, design, food&wine, and music events. The programme will include the Piano Lessons by Frida Bollani (Saturday 21 at 7 p.m.) and Paolo Jannacci (Sunday 22 at 7 p.m.) – who will entertain the audience with music performances interspersed with personal stories on their beloved instrument – and two concerts by Elisa D’Auria (Sunday 22 at 3 p.m.), who will present a tribute to the 100th anniversary of Iannis Xenakis, and Marino Nahon (Saturday 21 at 3 p.m.), with a playlist focused on German Romanticism.
